About the Essay Contest
First Baptist Church Mahan invites students to participate in our Black History Month Essay Contest. This opportunity encourages thoughtful reflection on Black history through the lens of faith, personal identity, and lived experience.

Submission Window
Submission Deadline: February 28, 2026

Submission Instructions
Online: Please complete the form on this page and enter your essay.
In-Person:  If you prefer to submit a printed essay, please drop it off at the church office by February 28, 2026 with your name and grade level clearly marked.
*Only one submission per participant.

Who Can Participate
The contest includes multiple age and school groups, each with its own scoring rubric.
Participants must select the appropriate category before submitting their essay.


Judging Rubric
All essays will be evaluated using a grade-appropriate rubric designed to reflect the student’s age, writing level, and depth of understanding. While expectations increase by grade level, all participants are assessed across the following core areas:
